Travel Tips for South East Asia

The beginning of March means the end of the monsoon season for most countries in South East Asia, promising hot weather and clear bright skies as the dry season begins. Many of the tourists planning to visit the region this year will set off in the next few weeks. However, in addition to golden beaches and the chance to escape the British winter, a trip to this region requires a little planning in order to ensure that your holiday isn’t interrupted by any minor or potentially fatal medical issues. Here at Hampshire Travel Clinic we can help you prepare for your dream holiday with detailed advice on how to keep safe and healthy.

Here are some of our top safety tips for travelling in South East Asia:

Do some research and make sure you are up to date with any necessary vaccinations before you leave. Whether you’re heading to Borneo or Malaysia make sure you know which vaccinations are recommended or required before you travel. Generally, travellers to countries in South East Asia need vaccinations for: Yellow Fever, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Tetanus and Tuberculosis. We recommend visiting your travel clinic six weeks before you plan to leave as this will give you time to learn about the vaccinations and other safety measures. Vaccinations must be given at least ten days before your travel date in order to be effective so if you are leaving soon we recommend booking an urgent appointment at Hampshire Travel Clinic.

National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

This March will be National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, which is run by the charity Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate Cancer UK will spend four weeks fundraising and increasing public awareness of the most prevalent form of cancer amongst men in the UK. However, many people have no knowledge of this event and why it is so important. Here are some reasons why we need Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, what you can learn from this month and why it can help save lives.

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer for men in the UK. According to Cancer Research UK, 13.24% of all men will receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer during their lifetime, that is 1 in 8 men, and, out of all the different types of cancer, prostate cancer is the 4th most common cause of death in the UK. Unfortunately there is not enough public knowledge about the disease and what factors put certain groups of people at greater risk, making it harder to diagnose the disease early.

5 Best health apps for your smartphone

Most of us started 2015 with health and fitness focused resolutions but sticking to them can be tricky, as we struggle to work out where we fit in the exercise, how we change our diet routine and what, if any progress we’re making. Just before Christmas we witnessed the launch of iOS 8 for iPhone in a blaze of publicity – much of which was tied to Apple’s integrated health app. The publicity also brought to people’s attention a slew of other health and fitness apps for both Android and iOS. With these apps you can now use your smartphone to organise your diet, exercise, body and mind. Whether you’re craving a healthy treat or need a quick fitness fix, a tap on the screen of your smartphone is all that’s needed.

‘MyFitnessPal’ contains a massive database of foods and their associated calorific values. Its diary feature allows you to input what you eat together with any exercise that you do throughout the day. The app calculates how many calories you’ve taken in, minus how many you’ve burnt and displays the balance.
